Have you ever stood in one place and thought, Well, this is kind of in the middle of everywhere?
That thought crossed my mind on a side trip on the back roads of Marathon County, Wisconsin – as I’m on my way home from visiting Mom & Dad – they live in Shawano County.
Tucked away near the unincorporated community of Poniatowski is a small Marathon county park that holds a pretty big distinction: the 45° North, 90° West Geographic Marker — the exact intersection of the 45th parallel of latitude and the 90th meridian of longitude.
On a map, it’s just another dot. On the ground, it feels a little more special than that.

Why This Spot Matters
There’s some cool facts behind this place that makes it worth the drive, even if you’re not a hardcore geography buff.
Standing at 45° north means you’re exactly halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. At 90° west, you’re a quarter of the way around the Earth from the Prime Meridian in Greenwich, England. Put those together, and you’re standing in one of only four 45–90 points on the entire planet.
Two of the others sit way out in an ocean. The third is deep in the mountains of China. That makes this little patch of Wisconsin farmland the most accessible 45–90 marker in the world.
What You’ll Find There
Getting to the marker is simple: a short, walk along a gravel path between a forest and a field. There’s no crowds or gift shop. Just wind, snow, or sunshine — depending on the day.
At the site, you’ll find:
- A bronze marker set into the ground at the exact intersection — perfect for photos and standing-right-on-the-spot moments.
- Educational signs explaining how latitude and longitude work and why this location is special.
- A reminder that your phone GPS might be off by a few feet, while professional surveying equipment can pinpoint the location down to the inch.
In other words, don’t panic if your coordinates don’t line up perfectly — you’re close enough.
A Few Tips Before You Go
- Dress for Wisconsin. Winter here doesn’t mess around. The path is usually cleared, but boots are still a good idea.
- Make it official. Stop at the Wausau Chamber of Commerce and sign the logbook to join the 45–90 Club. It’s a fun little badge of honor.
- Take the screenshot. Pull up your maps app while standing on the marker and capture those numbers as close to 45.0000, -90.0000 as you can.
Standing in the Middle
There’s something special knowing that my boots were standing at a point recognized around the world. It’s a reminder of how big this planet really is — and how sometimes the most meaningful places aren’t loud, crowded, or famous.
Sometimes, it’s just a quiet patch of Wisconsin farmland, waiting for someone curious enough to stop.
And honestly, I’m glad I did.
