Whitetail Deer in the Driveway: An Evening Surprise in Otter Creek

Last night, while LeAnn and I were out feeding the horses, we got one of those moments that reminds you why rural life never gets old.

Two whitetail deer fawns came down the driveway, drawn in by a few apples and some corn. They moved slow and cautious at first, but it didn’t take long for them to realize we weren’t a threat. Before we knew it, they were standing just fifteen feet away, calmly eating and watching us as much as we watched them.

There’s something special about being this close to whitetail deer. You can see the twitch of their ears, and notice how alert their eyes are, even while they feed. For a few minutes, it was just a quiet evening shared with a pair of curious visitors.

Moments like this are part of everyday life here in Otter Creek, but they never lose their magic. Seeing these deer so comfortable in the driveway is a reminder that we’re sharing this land, not just living on it.

It’s a simple experience, but one I won’t soon forget.
