The Moon and Venus Over Otter Creek

Some of the best things I see around our place in Otter Creek aren’t things I go looking for.

This evening, I was outside doing to do the chores, feeding Saleena and taking care of the kitties when I happened to look down the hay field toward the west.

There it was.

A thin crescent moon hanging low over the trees, with Venus shining nearby.

I knew right away that I was looking at something I don’t get to see very often.

The moon and Venus don’t line up like this every evening. From what I understand, this kind of view only comes together a few times a year, and when it does, the window to see it is pretty short.

And tonight, I happened to be home and feeding a horse and some cats.

The Moon and Venus

That’s what I like about living out here in Otter Creek. You can be doing something as ordinary as evening chores and suddenly find yourself standing there looking at something you weren’t expecting

The sun had already gone down, there was still some light left in the sky. The trees were mostly in silhouette and the crescent moon and Venus stood out against it.

I walked around the barn.

It’s simply what I saw standing in our hay field tonight.

And that’s what makes it special to me.

There are probably millions of pictures of the moon and Venus.

But there probably aren’t many pictures of this particular place — from this particular hay field, with these particular trees along the horizon, on this particular evening.

And I was here for it.

That’s something I don’t want to take for granted.

A lot of life is made up of the same things we do over and over again. Feed the horses. Feed the cats. Do the chores.

Most evenings don’t seem particularly memorable while we’re living them.

Tonight it was the sky.

For just a short while, the crescent moon and Venus lined up over Otter Creek.

I happened to be outside and I happened to look up.

Sometimes that’s all it takes.

Please know that you don’t have to go somewhere special to find something worth remembering.

Sometimes you just have to be home when it happens.
