In the warm early morning hours of Thursday, May 21, 2026, while most folks were still asleep, a beautiful little girl arrived here at Otter Creek. A healthy baby filly took her first breath, stood on wobbly legs, and quietly changed our world.
We are absolutely thrilled to officially welcome the newest member of our family to the homestead: a beautiful, healthy baby filly we’ve named Carmen Celeste.
A Natural Born Mother
Her mama, Judy, has always been a special mare. She’s the kind of horse that earns your trust one day at a time and somehow becomes part of the family before you realize it. Watching her step into motherhood has been something else. From the moment Carmen arrived, Judy knew exactly what to do. She’s attentive, protective, patient, and calm—the kind of mother every foal deserves.

Shaky Legs and Big Confidence for the New Filly
And Carmen? Well, she’s already making quite an impression.
Those long legs are getting steadier every day. Her curiosity is growing by the minute. One moment she’s tucked safely beside her mama, and the next she’s investigating every corner of the paddock like she owns the place. She has that perfect mix of confidence and innocence that only a newborn foal can pull off.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name Carmen Celeste seemed fitting from the start.
“Carmen” comes from the Latin word meaning “song,” “poem,” or “verse”. It is also the root word for “charm” and “incantation”, while “Celeste” means heavenly or of the sky. Put together, her name feels like a heavenly song—a reminder of the simple blessings that sometimes arrive when you least expect them.
Looking at the little white “C” on her forehead and those bright, curious eyes, it’s hard not to smile. She carries herself with confidence, even if she’s still figuring out exactly where all four feet belong.

The Genetic Recipe for a Beautiful Horse
For the folks tracking the horse math, Carmen’s breed makeup is a powerhouse combination of heavy draft heritage and versatile muscle.
- Mama Judy is half Belgian and half Haflinger.
- The Sire (Stallion) is half Belgian and half Brabant.
When you do the math, that means little Carmen Celeste is 75% Belgian/Brabant and 25% Haflinger.
| Breed | What It Brings to Carmen |
| Belgian & Brabant (75%) | The ultimate draft foundation. Incredible bone density, deep-chested power, a calm and willing disposition, and that classic thick-set build. |
| Haflinger (25%) | Exceptional smarts, high endurance, versatility, and likely a gorgeous flaxen mane and tail down the road. |
It’s a “redneck special” blend that gives us the best of all worlds: a horse with enough endurance to ride all day, but refined enough to be incredibly agile, smart, and a true pleasure to handle. She’s already showing off that stout Brabant confidence, and it’s going to be something else to watch her grow into those big draft hooves.
A Reminder to Pause
As a self-described redneck, I’ve spent years fixing fences, hauling hay, chasing equipment problems, and worrying about weather forecasts. Then a tiny filly takes her first steps, and suddenly none of those things seem nearly as important.
I just stand there and watch.
I watch a mare nuzzle her baby.
I watch shaky legs become steady.
And I watch the beginning of a story that hasn’t been written yet.

I realize I’m witnessing something remarkable.
The Adventures Ahead
We’re thankful that both Judy and Carmen are healthy and doing well. We know there will be many adventures ahead, and we’re looking forward to sharing them with everyone who follows along with life here at Otter Creek.
For now, we’re simply enjoying these first precious days.
Welcome to the world, Carmen Celeste.
